Cooperation – Guatemala, Italy backs coffee growers

The Italian Cooperation is backing coffee growers in Guatemala through a multilateral emergency contribution of 200,000 USD for an urgent intervention by FAO in response to the emergency caused by a coffee plant fungus that is generating serious economic and food security consequences.

Aid to 1200 growers in Huista region

The project, already agreed on in its general design by the Italian embassy in Guatemala and the local FAO office, is part of a United Nations strategic response aimed at assisting approximately 1,200 small coffee growers in the Huista region of the Huehuetenango Department, in coordination with the local agriculture ministry and the national coffee growers association of Guatemala (ANACAFE). The project will be carried out in close coordination with an ongoing economic development project (PRODEL) financed by the Italian Cooperation, with a view to strengthening the impact and efficiency of Italian aid to local communities while at the same time increasing their capacity to prevent, mitigate and respond to natural disasters.
