The young Christian woman detained in Khartoum after being condemned to death for apostasy, is now free and has arrived with her two children in Rome on a flight provided by the Prime Minister’s Office, accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Lapo Pistelli, who has been following the Sudanese woman’s case at length. She was received by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his wife Agnese and foreign minister Federica Mogherini.
A great joy
“This is a great joy”, declared Minister Mogherini, recalling the Italian government’s commitment “even before the sentenced was announced. Today, thanks to the efforts of many” she added, “we are able to welcome Meriam to Rome”.
