Somalia Summit – Italy’s role in stabilisation and national reconciliation

The event being held in the margins of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly will evaluate progress achieved in the stabilisation and national reconciliation of Somalia in light of the objectives identified by the Somali authorities in the government’s “Vision 2016” programme. These include the adoption of a Federal Constitution within 2015 and parliamentary and the holding of presidential elections within 2016.

The summit will also offer an opportunity to exchange views on remaining challenges and difficulties, and to identify the priority sectors on which to focus international support ahead of the first ministerial meeting of the High Level Partnership Forum on Somalia planned for Copenhagen in November.

Italy’s role

Italy actively participates in the international coordination mechanisms underpinning political priorities in the stabilisation of Somalia, lends financial and other support to IGAD and co-chairs the IGAD Partners Forum (IPF).

Italy is working within the EU to maintain financial support for AMISOM, has made an 800,000USD contribution to the UN trust fund for the Somalia army and holds the command of the EU military training mission for Somali troops, an operation in which we maintain the largest contingent; Italy has planned a training programme for 200 police officers that will be implemented soon in Djibouti (based on the achievements of early 2013).
