Frankfurt Book Fair: Franceschini to open “Punto Italia”

Dario Franceschini, the Minister for Culture, will open the “Punto Italia” at the 66th Frankfurt Book Fair, the most important international event for the sale of publishing rights and Italy’s most important event for the promotion of Italian literary culture and publishing abroad.

Culture Minister Dario Franceschini will open the “Punto Italia” at the 66th Frankfurt Book Fair. The “Buchmesse”, which runs from 8 to 12 October, is the most important international event for the sale of publishing rights. And in Italy’s case, the most important event for the promotion of Italian culture and publishing abroad. The Fair will host 7100 exhibitors, over 200 of them Italian, from 103 countries in its 171,790 square metres of exhibition space, with Finland this year’s guest of honour.

The Italian publishing world will be represented by the “Punto Italia”, a space of 274 square metres produced by the Italian Publishers Association (AIE), ICE-Italian Trade Agency and the Ministry for Economic Development. About 1300 books published by 47 Italian publishers will be displayed and visitors will also be able to consult the online database of books for sale.

As representative of the Italian Government, which is chairing the European Union Council in this semester, Franceschini will open the Italian space at 10.30 on Wednesday 8 October 2014. He will be accompanied by the President of the AIE, Marco Polillo; the Italian Ambassador to Germany, Pietro Benassi; the Italian Consul General in Frankfurt, Cristiano Cottafavi; and leading Italian publishers.

The opening will be followed by an event for publishers and the Italian and international press where – facts and figures to hand – participants will analyse the state of the publishing sector in Italy. They will also discuss the role and work of the Italian EU Presidency to support the world of books and the question of VAT on ebooks.
