Ethiopia – Italy working to improve health in south-central Ethiopia

Italy’s commitment to improve health inEthiopia has made further progress with the opening of the building that will host the local health department for the Oromia region, in the country’s centre-south. The opening was attended by the Italian Ambassador, Giuseppe Mistretta, and Don Dante Carraro, director of Doctors with Africa–CUAMM, a non-governmental organisation (NGO). The centre was built and equipped with funding from Italian Development Cooperation through the NGO’s project in Wolisso.


Improvements to maternal health at St Luke’s Hospital in Wolisso


St Luke’s Hospital in Wolisso, and the local nursing school, have notably improved conditions for mothers and children in a region where the maternal mortality rate is one of the world’s highest. St Luke’s also offers screening for breast and cervical cancer and for tuberculosis, and frequently receives patients from other areas and from the capital, Addis Ababa. Read more, in Italian.
