An exhibition of Italian artists, organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo, has opened in the Egyptian capital with trumpet fanfares by the flag-wavers of Sant’Elpidio a Mare. Entitled “Images and Words”, the exhibition, which runs until 13 November 2014, features works where “the genius of literature meets the genius of the visual arts”.
One such work is Hebdomeros, by Giorgio de Chirico, described by Cocteau in 1929 as “the greatest surrealist novel ever written”. As Paolo Sabbatini, the Director of the Institute, explained, “De Chirico is one of Italy’s iconic artists, just as Picasso is, for Spain”. As the Institute is also concerned with promoting the Italian language, the combination of art and literature seemed particularly apt, continued the Director.
In the coming weeks the Institute will also be hosting a meeting for the directors of the Italian archaeological missions. Read more, in Italian
