Over the centuries, Istanbul was the capital of various empires, from the Byzantine to the Ottoman. That it is a city symbolic of the encounter of East and West, as well as a hub for culture (and was European Capital of Culture in 2010), is something that Rome’s historic Russo Art Gallery has well understood. The gallery will make its official international debut next Monday with the opening of its new branch in Istanbul’s Beyolu district, one of the city’s most alert to and interested in new artistic trends. The inaugural evening will continue in the residence of the Italian ambassador with a dinner hosted by Ambssador Gianpaolo Scarante, according to whom “the opening of the Russo Art Gallery’s new branch in the heart of Istanbul is another contribution to bringing our two cultures closer”.
