A “bridge” linking Expo 2015 and Matera 2019, the city’s year as European Capital of Culture, is being planned. The aim is to capitalise on the initiatives that the Italian Government intends to organise through our embassies to promote both events in Latin America. A key goal is to increase tourism numbers, not least in terms of visitors attending cultural events in Matera, the capital of Basilicata Region. The Region intends to finance “homecoming” tourism, as the President and Vice President of the Regional Council, Piero Lacorazza and Francesco Mollica, explained at a recent meeting with the Italian Ambassador in Buenos Aires, Teresa Castaldo.
