On Thursday, 29 January, a conference will be held in Athens entitled, “From Salonika to Athens. The extermination of the Jews in Greece”. Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute, the event is part of the international Holocaust Remembrance initiatives and commemorates, in particular, Italy’s attempt to save as many Jews as possible – including non-Italians to whom false travel documents were issued – by sending them to Athens. Their safety only proved temporary, however, as after Italy’s capitulation in September 1943, the situation worsened, leading to eventual exterminations. The conference will be followed by a choral concert that will include traditional Jewish songs. Read more, in Italian.
