“We need to take strong action against Daesh, the so-called Caliphate of the Islamic State; we need to eliminate terrorism that acts as a state because there lies the origin of the threats”. This was the comment of Minister Paolo Gentiloni, speaking on the Agorà programme after the attack on Charlie Hebdo.
Italy in the international coalition against ISIS
Gentiloni pointed out that Italy is a member of the international coalition against the “Caliphate”, a coalition that is also supporting all those, like the Kurds, who are fighting ISIS. The Minister underscored that any confusion between terrorism, Islam and immigrants must be avoided. With the attack against Charlie Hebdo “it is freedom of thought and freedom to criticise Islam that has been attacked”, in Gentiloni’s view, “and we must defend that freedom”.
