In light of the serious humanitarian crisis resulting from clashes in Eastern Ukraine, the Italian Cooperation has earmarked an overall contribution 200,000 euro for emergency humanitarian interventions by the International Red Cross Committee (IRCC).
Emergency assistance activities in concert with Ukraine Red Cross and local authorities
A 100,000-euro contribution to the IRCC will go toward emergency assistance activities carried out in concert with the Ukraine Red Cross and the local authorities. These include the distribution of food, sanitary kits, medical supplies and construction materials to the residents and displaced persons of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions. Planned also are efforts at encouraging respect for international humanitarian law, the reunification of families and assistance for detainees in Zaporizhia, Odessa, Poltava, Kharkiv, Mariupol, Kiev and Donetsk. The UNHCR-directed contribution aims to underpin the organisation’s activities within the framework of the UN response plan, such as the distribution of first necessity goods and security activities in the Donetsk area.
The contributions are a response to the appeal launched by EU Commission President Junker for the greater mobilisation of resources on behalf of the Ukrainian people. The violence in that country has, to date, resulted in approximately one million internally displaced persons and 1.4 million in need of assistance.
