Under-Secretary Benedetto Della Vedova is in New York to participate in the 59th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women which, in the presence of S-G- Ban Ki-moon and president of the UN General Assembly Sam Kutesa, will adopt a brief political declaration.
Italy’s role
Italy will underscore its commitment on the issue of gender, reasserting the priorities of the fight to end violence against women and girls and promoting women’s role as builders of peace and development, as well as the elimination of all forms of exploitation and discrimination. Italy’s dedication to gender equality will also be foregrounded during the debate, which will confront the topics associated with the process for outlining the post-2015 Agenda and verifying implementation of UN Security Council resolution no. 1325/2000 “Women, Peace and Security”.
Special importance
This year’s Commission session assumes special importance in as much as it is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the historic conference on women held in Beijing in 1995, and to the review of the Declaration and the Action Platform on gender equality that followed it (Beijing+20).
