Rome and Tel Aviv have stepped up cooperation in the science and technology field. A meeting of the 14th Italy-Israel mixed commission met recently in Milan, at EXPO 2015, to assess and approve 16 co-financed projects with the themes, this year, of water-treatment, pharmacogenomics and cyber security. The commission meets annually under a Bilateral Scientific Cooperation Agreement in force between Italy and Israel since 2002.

One of the research tracks, “new technologies for land and water treatment” in the agro-food sector, reflects the “feeding the planet” theme of the Universal Exposition in Milan. The Commission also approved a new “Rita Levi Montalcini” award to encourage mobility by distinguished scientists between leading Italian and Israeli universities and academic research centres. The creation of a joint laboratory between the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the University of Tel Aviv was also approved, its aim being to develop cooperation in the cyber-security field.
Italy has allocated over 2 million euro per year to its collaboration with Israel in sectors with a high innovation and technology content. Read more, in Italian.
