Khartoum – Cooperation, the Embassy holds a workshop on women and journalism

The Italian Embassy in Khartoum has recently held the “Empowering Women in Sudanese Media” workshop in partnership with the local representation of UNESCO, the National Union of Sudanese Journalists and the Italian Development Cooperation Agency. The aim of the workshop, which was attended by approximately 200 participants, was to relaunch the role of women in Sudan’s journalism by focusing the attention of Sudanese institutions, journalists and international community on the role of women as the linchpin of development for a qualitative growth of Sudan’s media and press and as the privileged channel through which to convey social messages throughout the Country. “The central theme of the workshop – said Italian Ambassador in Khartoum, Fabrizio Lobasso – has been instrumental to putting together two critical elements in Sudan: gender equality and freedom of the press, in a wide-reaching debate, thus giving the opportunity to comprehensively debate these factors as well as the course of action to be taken in the near future.” The workshop subsequently explored two case studies by female journalists from the eastern regions of Kassala, Gedaref and Port Sudan (‘Women and Media in East Sudan’ and ‘Community Radio in East Region’). The case studies represented the appropriate connection to link up to the Italian-led EU cooperation programmes in those regions.
