Eight Italian schools abroad are part of the UNESCO Associated Schools International Network

Eight Italian schools abroad joined the UNESCO Associated Schools International Network in the 2015/16 school year, compared to the two that had taken part in 2013/14, when the programme was first introduced.

Admission to the Network is based on schools’ ability to propose educational projects that raise awareness among students on United Nations and UNESCO values. The promotion of these values is traditionally a key component of  Italy’s foreign policy. Our diplomacy has always been actively engaged in all international fora, both multilaterally and bilaterally, in protecting human rights, sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals, protecting and celebrating our material and immaterial linguistic and cultural heritage, cultural tourism, intercultural education, developing and promoting peace and citizenship.

The Italian schools that have entered the UNESCO Network are three state schools in Addis Ababa, Barcelona and Istanbul and five private schools: “Scuola Italiana Roma” in Algiers, “Italo Svevo” in Cologne, “Cristoforo Colombo” in Buenos Aires, “Fondazione Torino” in Nova Lima (Brazil) and “Antonio Raimondi” in Lima.

The initiative, given the undeniable symbolic value of its aim to promote United Nations values, is a valuable recognition of the work carried out by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as well as by school teachers and leaders working abroad to promote the Italian language.
