Tel Aviv will stage a new production of Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma, the opera that made its debut at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala on 26 December 1831.
The premiere is scheduled for 30 November – with performances until 17 December – at the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center, the venue of the Israeli Opera, which promotes the programme in partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv.
“Centred on the main protagonist, the opera became the tour de force of several great sopranos of the past, including Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland and Montserrat Caballé. The opera is set in Gaul at the time of the Roman Empire and reveals explicit ties with the myth of Medea,” reads the presentation note by the Italian Cultural Institute.
