The Italian Cultural Institute (IIC) in Cairo hosted the first international edition of “Critical Tuesdays”, the meetings launched by art historian Alberto Dambruoso that have been held in Italy since 2010.
This first “overseas” version of the event was presented by sculptor Aron Demetz who told of his career and of his personal sculpting technique of wood and wood resin.
Following an introduction by art critic Alberto Dambruoso and the IIC director Paolo Sabbatini, the artist was interviewed by a curious and enthusiastic audience mostly made up of young students, including the best achievers of Cairo’s Don Bosco School of Italian Studies.
The sculptor, who had visited Egypt about twenty years earlier, said he had rediscovered a strong empathy with ancient Egyptian sculptures and especially with “The Mayor of the Town”, the famous wooden statue displayed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
Acknowledging the success of the event and wishing to promote the work of other contemporary sculptors, and in view of the upcoming opening of the 57th Venice Art Biennale (13/05/2017 – 26/11/2017), the IIC in Cairo intends to repeat the event and schedule it at regular intervals.
The video recording of the event will soon be available online, both on the website of the IIC in Cairo and as a supplement to the article already published on the Artribune magazine.
