Portugal – Exhibitions – The study of clouds in the work of Matteo Fato

The solo exhibition of Matteo Fato, scheduled to open at 7 p.m. on 4 May at the Italian Cultural Institute (IIC) in Lisbon, is entitled “Autoritratto (del) Blu di Prussia” (“Self-Portrait (of) Prussian Blue”). The exhibition, organised by the IIC and curated by Simone Ciglia, presents a series of pictorial works on the study of clouds. Fato began this series of studies in 2008 and, in this solo exhibition in Portugal, will present the works painted over several years in addition to several unpublished works. The studies arise from a research study that associates traditional Chinese painting to the symbols contained in the language used by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Thus, they arise from the intention to seek within the pictorial representation a moment bordering between writing and imagery, between words and thought. Clouds become the objects that naturally enclose this limit within reality as they too represent a word that does not contain a definite image, but is in continuous motion.
