Portugal – ‘Treasures of the Vatican Museums’ exhibition lands in Lisbon

Lisbon’s Museu Nacional de Arte Antica has organised the exhibition “Madonna. Tesouros dos Museos do Vaticano”, with the support of the Italian Cultural Institute in Lisbon. The event will open on May 19, and will run until September 10. The curators are Alessandra Rodolfo and Jose’ Alberto Seabra Carvalho. This is the first time that a selection of masterpieces from the famous Vatican Museum collections are on display in Portugal. The highlights of the exhibition will be, among others, works by the Italian Primitives (Taddeo di Bartolo, Sano di Pietro, Fra’ Angelico) from the Vatican Pinacoteca,  great Renaissance and Baroque masters (Raffaello, Pinturicchio, Salviati, Pietro da Cortona, Barocci), along with tapestries and miniatures from the archives of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. The exhibition includes also pieces coming from the Galleria Borghese (Venusti and Sassoferrato) and from the Galleria Corsini (Gentileschi and Van Dyck). The Virgin Mary is the iconographic theme of an exhibition whose timeline expands from the end of Classical antiquity to Modern Times. The exhibition also hosts a group of works by Italian artists coming from several Portuguese private and public institutions.
