This morning Luigi Maria Vignali, the Director General for Italians Abroad and for Migration Policies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, appeared before the Senate Committee for the Affairs of Italians Abroad in a hearing on the consequences of Brexit for the community of Italians residing in the United Kingdom (Act No. 969).
During the hearing, the director general affirmed that protecting Italian citizens residing in the United Kingdom is an absolute political priority of the Italian Government, also in view of the schedule of negotiations. During a recent visit to London and Manchester, the director general had the opportunity to verify first-hand the fears of Italian citizens in the UK and to draw precious indications on the future of negotiations and on the rights of fellow Italians.
The hearing followed the one by the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Vincenzo Amendola, and by the Undersecretary of State at the Presidency of the Council with additional delegated powers for European Affairs, Hon. Sandro Gozi, who were both heard on the same subject last 16 and 31 May.
