Professor Lucia Nadin will hold a lecture on “ Non c’è progresso di studi senza l’utilizzo delle fonti” (There is no progress in research if sources are not usesd) to mark the awardi of an Honorary Degree by the University of Tirana.
Prof. Nadin’s lecture is designed to show the quantity and quality of the new elements of knowledge about Albania’s history and culture that have emerged in over twenty years of research. She will dwell on the following areas: characteristics of Albanian emigration to Venice and the profound differences with migration to Southern Italy (arbëresh); the study of archive sources to establish the time line and settlement models of Albanians in Northern Italy; type of sources; variety of texts and their context; examples of results: finding the text of the Statutes of Scutari; the resistance of Shkoder in the Venetian epic narrative; the writing habits of Marin Barleti and his ties with his publisher Bernardino de Vitali; the figurative system of the missal (“meshari”) of Gjon Buzuko and the Venetian publishing world; the creation and maintenance of the Myth of Skanderbeg in Venice in art and the theatrical tradition; a newly discovered eighteenth century tragedy: Skanderbeg by Trifone Smecchia; possible lines of inquiry to follow by anyone who wishes to continue these studies in the future.
