The Italian strategy in the Mediterranean

dizionario-mediterraneo eng

Today, the Mediterranean is a region that is more fragmented and – at the same time – more interconnected than ever. On the one hand, it is the centre of violent crises and sectarian disputes; on the other, a global platform of economic, energy and infrastructural interconnectivity between Europe, Africa and Asia.

Italy – affirmed Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano – knows better than any other Country the language of the Mediterranean and proposes a ‘dictionary’ to decipher the opportunities and challenges.” The orientation of our “integrated approach” to the region are summarised in the Report drafted by the Foreign Ministry for the Rome Med 2017, with ten key words: Commitment, Responsibility, Inclusivity, Opportunity, Co-Development, Partnership, Culture, Rights, Resilience, Order.

The Report also presents the contents of the activities and policies that Italy is promoting in a multitude of sectors: Security, Migration, Economy, Energy, Culture, Science and Cooperation. The aim is to better tackle the challenges facing us (starting with Libya, Syria, migration flows and fighting Daesh) and to build a positive agenda for the region. The Report is enriched with diagrams and tables summarising the Italy’s frontline commitment in the Mediterranean.

The Med Dialogues – remarked Minister Alfano – are an important meeting point where to develop and design, together with all the Countries in the Mediterranean and with our major global partners, the bridge that must bring us closer and teach us to better speak the extraordinary ‘language’ of the Mediterranean with a shared and inclusive approach.”
