Stefania Giannini appointed Assistant Director General for Education at UNESCO

Alfano: “With this appointment, Director-General Azoulay has acknowledged the undoubted qualities and competences of the former Minister of Education, University and Research and, at the same time, Italy’s constant and growing engagement in the Organisation”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, expressed great satisfaction for the appointment of Prof Stefania Giannini as Assistant Director General for Education of UNESCO. “It is reason of great pride for us to see an Italian academic personality of high standing such as Stefania Giannini being conferred an appointment of this importance and sensitivity,” said Minister Alfano on commenting the news.

“With this appointment, Director-General Azoulay has acknowledged the undoubted qualities and competences of the former Minister of Education, University and Research and, at the same time, Italy’s constant and growing engagement in the Organisation. This acknowledgment, which is the result of a thorough selection process, is a further stimulus to intensify our action to support and promote the values underpinning UNESCO’s mandate, in terms of budget resources (more than one third of the total) and of personnel; under its competence are also 7 specialised institutions and a technical and vocational training centre. Through this sector UNESCO, which is part of the UN System, coordinates the set of initiatives aimed at achieving Goal 4 on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: “Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning”.
