Italian agri-food products in the United States market

As part of the 3rd Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, the Italian Embassy in Washington, in partnership with the New York Office of ICE-Agency, organised a meeting on Italian agri-food and wine imports into the United States. The meeting was attended by officials from the Italian Ministry of Health, from the EU Delegation in Washington and from the major U.S. federal agencies that are key for our export sector such as the FDA (Department of Health), the FSIS (Department of Agriculture – USDA) and the Customs. In the meeting, food and wine experts made presentations on the latest trends in the United States.

The meeting offered the opportunity to take stock of the state of health of our exports to the important North American market and to voice the needs of Italian companies, which were able to discuss directly with officials from Italian and American institutions.

Agri-food products are among the leading items that Italy exports to the United States of America and confirm the attention that American consumers devote to the quality of our traditional food and wine products. In 2017, our export volumes were worth 4.8 billion Dollars, up 5.4% from 2016. In the first 9 months of 2018, Italian exports to the USA amounted to 3.758 billion Dollars, with a 9.8% hike from the same period of the previous year.

Moreover, Italy continues to be the unchallenged leader in wine exports in terms of quantity and ranks second in terms of value. This growth is paralleled by a continuous uptrend in direct investments in the market, as corroborated by the presence of the representatives of several Italian companies at the meeting. This situation testifies to a dynamic sector capable of combining an unrelenting care for quality, thanks to spearheading technology, and respect for the food production traditions that have always characterised the Italian market.

“Italy once again confirms to be synonymous with excellence, especially in the food and wine sector. Quality, tradition, passion and innovation are the distinctive traits of a leading sector that has proved capable of beating the fiercest competitors and of imposing its presence on the US market over the last few years,” said the Italian Ambassador, Armando Varricchio.
