With a total bid of 431 million reais, about 67 million euro, TIM Brazil was awarded the contract for 1.3 of the 4 lots in the sphere of the call for tenders for assignment of the 3.5 GHz frequencies, on concession for 20 years, and renewable. These are the frequencies that offer services to consumers and businesses in the urban areas of the country.
TIM Brazil would invest about 1 billion US dollars over nine years, mainly with the goal of permitting migration of the satellite TV signal, which currently occupies the same 3.5 GHz bandwidth; realizing a private communications network for the Brazilian public; installing a network in fiber optics via river in the Amazon region; spreading fiber optics within the country; making 5G available in all the capitals of the federal states by July 2022.
During the bidding process, with offers for another 450 million reais, or about 70 million euro, TIM Brazil was also awarded lots relative to the 2.3 GHz frequency for the states of Rio, Espirito Santo and Minas Gerais, and another four lots for the 26 GHz frequencies, with an offer of about 37 million reais, or 5.8 million euro, also at the regional level, all on concession for 20 years.
With over 23% of the mobile phone market, 51 million customers and a net profit in the second quarter 2021 of about 115 million euro (+151.3% with respect to the same period of 2020), Brazil is the second largest market in the world for the TIM group, after Italy.
