On the occasion of National Unity and Armed Forces Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation publishes the first Voluntary Report on the Implementation of International Humanitarian Law in Italy, available here. The document, drafted by the Commission for the Study and Development of International Humanitarian Law, not only focuses on the implementation of relevant standards, but also provides an overview of the good practices adopted.
On the day when we celebrate the dedication and contribution of the Armed Forces to the birth of Italy as a united, free and democratic State, the Report provides a snapshot of how our country operates, nationally and internationally, in the fields of training and evolution of regulations, promotion and dissemination of International Humanitarian Law, protection of vulnerable people and cultural heritage in conflict areas, regulation of combat means and the use of new technologies in warfare contexts.
The Report, drafted jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the other State Administrations represented within the Commission and the Italian Red Cross, is in line with Italy’s traditional sensitivity to humanitarian issues and highlights the great attention that the Italian government pays to the matter, which has become even more tragically topical in the wake of Russian aggression against Ukraine and the massacre of civilians perpetrated by Hamas on the borders of the Gaza Strip.
The publication of the Report places Italy within the small group of countries that have so far embarked on a similar path, thus setting an example of good practice at the international level.
