Fighting piracy: at the World Navigation Organisation, Italy reasserts the fundamental principles of flag state jurisdiction and the immunity of organs of the state

The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Marta Dassu’, addressed a meeting of the International Maritime Organisation’s Maritime Safety Committee which took place in London today, 16 May 2012. The meeting was devoted to piracy and, more specifically, the presence of armed personnel on board merchant ships to counter this phenomenon.

During her speech, Under-Secretary Dassu’ underscored Italy’s commitment to ensuring the maximum security level for ships, not least through rules agreed at the international level. She pointed out that the action of the Italian Government is inspired first and foremost by compliance with international law, including in matters of flag state jurisdiction and the immunity of organs of the state. To this end, the Under-Secretary expressed the hope that all states participating in the joint effort to combat piracy would share the same attitude of respect for the international rules
