“Italy’s election to the Universal Postal Union’s Council of Administration and Postal Operations Council confirms our absolute international pre-eminence in this sector”. This was Minister Giulio Terzi’s comment on the elections held in Doha during the Organisation’s Congress. “This result was made possible”, Terzi continued, “by the foreign ministry’s intense collaboration with the Italian Postal System and the fruitful relations that our country maintains with the various postal systems around the world”.
At the same time, it is significant that Italy’s election coincides with the UPU’s approval of a resolution inviting Member Countries to reduce their fees for the electronic transfer of worker remittances in pursuit of the UN, G8 and G20 objectives. “Just a few days ago”, the minister pointed out, “while speaking at the UN General Assembly, President Monti renewed Italy’s commitment to reducing the global cost of remittances”. This reduction from 10% to 5% by the end of 2014 – a goal adopted by the G8 and G20 on Italy’s proposal – would mean an additional 15 billion dollars per year for migrant workers and their families.
