Of the 3,494,687 ballots send by embassies and consulates to Italians residing abroad, including those legally added locally, our foreign missions are reporting a turnout of 1,122,296. It was not possible to deliver 11.38% of those sent out.
The percentage of ballots of the total sent out and submitted to foreign missions in Europe is 31.1%; in South America 34.79%; in North and Central America 29.87%, and in Africa-Asia-Oceania 30.65%. All data are published on the www.esteri.it website.
The percentage of voters who cast a ballot is calculated by the Central Office for the Foreign Jurisdiction once the preliminary count is concluded.
A total of 1,000 foreign ministry staff in 204 embassies and consulates around the world have been working since November – when the electoral lists were formulated – to ensure all the necessary conditions by which approximately 3 million Italian voters residing abroad, and with the right to an absentee vote, were able to exercise that right, as well as the 10,852 citizens temporarily stationed abroad and belonging to the categories legally assigned the right to an absentee ballot (military personnel, employees of state administrations and university professors).
A special Task Force set up by the foreign ministry, in close coordination with the Ministry of the Interior, coordinated the voting process and the implementation of all organizational measures necessary to make it possible to vote by absentee ballot as prescribed by law.
