Today, 4 December 2013, the Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the agenda to find an appropriate and rapid solution to the case of Navy Riflemen Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone. The Secretary General of the Farnesina, Michele Valensise, has brought the decision to the attention of the Ambassador of India, Basant Kumar Gupta, who had been summoned at the instructions of Foreign Minister Emma Bonino.
During their discussion, the Secretary General told the Ambassador of Italy’s expectation that the proceeding in India will reach a rapid conclusion, with the most favourable outcome possible for our two marines.
The investigation by the Indian authorities is expected to close in a matter of days. Today’s meeting once again brought to the authorities’ attention the crucial importance of this case to Italian-Indian relations. Ambassador Gupta paid close attention to the message and assured the Secretary General that he would forward it immediately to the authorities in New Delhi.
Valensise also announced a forthcoming mission to India by the government’s special envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to follow this delicate stage of the case at first hand.
