Ukraine: stop violence, resume dialogue, says Bonino

“I am obviously concerned about what is happening in Ukraine, and am in constant contact with our ambassador, who is in dialogue with government authorities and members of the opposition movements. It is indispensable that all the parties concerned abstain from violence and seek to rapidly resume the contacts that will ensure the country a democratic future. The country must not squander the advances it has made in implementing the reforms necessary for political association and economic integration with Europe”, asserted Minister Emma Bonino in reference to the situation in Ukraine.

“Those responsible for the recent deadly incidents must be identified and the emergency legislation recently adopted repealed, in order to ensure demonstrators the peaceful exercise of fundamental rights such as freedom of association, expression and assembly”, the minister added, as she returned to Rome from Geneva-Davos, where she met with world leaders to discuss the situation in Syria after the meeting in Montreux.
