Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini expressed grief at the death of Reyhaneh Jabbari, the young Iranian woman who was hung at dawn today. “The execution of Reyhaneh is a deep and painful wound”, Mogherini said.
“We had all hoped that the international outcry might have saved the life of a young woman who, instead, has become a victim twice over: once of her rapist and then of a system that did not listen to so many appeals”, she added, “in confirmation of the fact that it is precisely in regard to basic human rights that dialogue between nations remains so difficult. And yet, the defence of human rights, and the abolition of the death penalty, are fundamental battles that Italy will never cease to wage”.
