Beatification of Mons. Romero a strong signal from Pope Francis, says Under-Secretary Giro

The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation with delegated authority for Latin America, Mario Giro, has expressed his satisfaction and emotion over the Holy Father’s decision to proceed with the beatification process for the Archbishop of San Salvador, Monsignor Romero. The Archbishop was the victim of a barbaric assassination in 1980, while he was celebrating Mass. “Mons. Romero is a martyr for the gospel and for the poor. He was killed because he openly opposed the violence that was polarising Salvador. He loved his people to the end and was the only, prophetic, voice standing up to the injustice and barbaric deeds in his country. Pope Francis’s decision redeems the memory of Mons. Romero and makes him a shining example for Latin America and indeed for the world”.
