The authorities of Gambia have released Massimo Liberati, Chief Engineer of Motopeschereccio Idra Q, who was arrested on 2 March along with Commander Sandro De Simone on the charge of using fishing nets non-compliant with Gambian regulations.
Liberati’s release was secured upon receipt of the ship owner’s guarantee of payment of a fine set by the Banjul judge. The Italian ambassador to Dakar spoke with Liberati, who he found in good health, and later informed the man’s wife of the outcome.
The Gambian authorities found that Commander De Simone, as being in charge of the boat, would remain in jail until the fine was paid. Our ambassador in Dakar continues to monitor the situation with the maximum attention. Deputy Ambassador Fornara is scheduled to arrive in Banjul this evening.
