The signing by President Salva Kiir of the agreement for the solution of the civil conflict in South Sudan has been welcomed by Italy. Opposition leader Riek Machar had already signed the agreement on 17 August 2015.
Italy hopes that the agreement will mark the start of a new period of stabilisation and growth for the country and has sent out a strong appeal to all parties concerned to apply the accord in full.
Italy took part in the mediation process as Co-Chair of the IGAD Partners Forum (IPF) and expresses its appreciation of the negotiating efforts of IGAD itself and of the African Union. IGAD is the Intergovernmental Authority for Development.
