Filippo Grandi confirmed as UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Gentiloni: source of national pride

“The United Nations General Assembly’s unanimous approval of the appointment proposed in recent days by Ban Ki-moon of Filippo Grandi as High Commissioner for Refugees is a source of great national pride and satisfaction”, said Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni. “We have backed Filippo Grandi for a post to which Italy has always attributed great importance. His thirty years of experience at the United Nations, particularly in humanitarian and refugee matters, makes Grandi the right person for this very delicate task”, the minister added.

“This appointment is also recognition of our country’s continuing commitment to confronting humanitarian emergencies and the migration crisis in full compliance with the principles of the United Nations Charter”, Gentiloni concluded.
