Within the framework of the Humanitarian Task Force – set up by the International Syria Support Group to guarantee access to humanitarian aid to all the Syrian people under siege – Italy has decided to make an emergency contribution of 400,000 Euros to the World Food Programme (WFP) for the distribution of food rations to the inhabitants of the city of Dayr al-Zawr, eastern Syria, under siege by Daesh since May 2014.
Since all the access roads to the city – which counts 200,000 inhabitants – have been blocked, the distribution of food aid (rice, flour, cereals, salt, sugar and oil) will be performed through a humanitarian air link that the WFP will put into operation in the upcoming hours through the use of its own fleet of aircraft.
This contribution falls within the scope of Italy’s broader humanitarian commitment in favour of the Syrian crisis – totalling 400 million dollars over the next three-year period – which was pledged at the London Donor Conference of last February 4.
