Today the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, had a telephone conversation with Swiss Foreign Minister, Didier Burkhalter. The Swiss minister confirmed that yesterday’s referendum in the Canton of Ticino will not have immediate consequences on Italian cross-border workers and that the legislation on foreign workers is currently under the scrutiny of the National Parliament.
On his part, Minister Gentiloni emphasised that any discrimination against Italian cross-border workers would represent an impediment to the EU-Swiss agreement.
Italy is committed to favouring that said agreement be based on common economic interests and on the mutual recognition of the principle of the free movement of persons.
