Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola, is in the second day of his mission in Ukraine

The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola, who arrived in Kiev yesterday, met this morning with Italian entrepreneurs working in the Ukrainian capital that recently established a Business Association. Trade between the two Countries exceeded three billion euros in 2016, recording a substantial increase in Italian exports, up 21.7%. Ukraine hosts approx. 300 companies that are totally or partially owned by Italian entrepreneurs, of which 150 operate directly on the Ukrainian market.After meeting the entrepreneurs, Undersecretary Amendola, accompanied by the Italian Ambassador to Ukraine, La Cecilia, held talks with the Chair of the Verkhovan Rada Foreign Affairs Committee, Anna Gopko, on bilateral relations. They also discussed the case of Andrea Rocchelli, the Italian journalist who was killed in Donbas in May 2014, an event whose dynamic is still to be fully understood. Mr Amendola then visited the headquarters of the OSCE special monitoring mission to Ukraine, where he was briefed by Chief Monitor Apakan, in light of the upcoming Italian OSCE chairmanship. In the runup to its Chairmanship, our Country joined the OSCE troika in the current year.The following appointment on the Undersecretary’s agenda was a meeting with young “Euro-optimist” parliamentarians with whom he engaged in a dialogue that also highlighted the role our Country played in favour of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Finally, he met with the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olena Zerkal, with whom he discussed about Ukrainian crises, the Minsk negotiations and the Italian Presidency of the G7, including the role the G7 Ambassadors played in supporting the undertaking of reforms in the Country. “We are proud of the excellent level of cooperation which exists between our two countries, and are determined to intensify it by enhancing our cultural and economic relations,” said the Undersecretary.In the evening, Undersecretary Amendola attended the premiere of Tosca at the National Opera in Kiev, together with the Minister of Culture Nyshuk and the Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Zerkal, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of  Rome and the 25th anniversary of relations between Italy and Ukraine. The event was jointly organized by the National Opera, the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Kiev.
