Telephone conversation between Minister Alfano and EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, had a telephone conversation today with the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement, Johannes Hahn.

The telephone call, which focused on the Western Balkans Summit due to take place under the Italian presidency on 12th July in Trieste, provided an opportunity for a further exchange of views on preparations for the Summit, particularly in light of the outcome of the meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers of Western Balkan Countries in Rome on 24 May this year, and the meeting between the High Representative, Federica Mogherini, and the Balkan Heads of Government.

Mr Alfano and Mr Hahn agreed on the need for the Western Balkans Process, and the Trieste Summit in particular, to achieve concrete results, contributing to the consolidation of the process of reform in the countries of the region.

Minister Alfano told Mr Hahn that “for the Western Balkan Countries, European integration remains a priority. The Trieste Summit will be an opportunity to confirm to those countries that the door to the European Union remains open”.
