Italy makes an emergency contribution to the UNHCR to provide humanitarian assistance to Congolese refugees in Angola

“Through the Italian Development Cooperation service, we have arranged to allocate 300,000 euros to the UNHCR to meet the dramatic humanitarian emergency in the Kasai Region, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These resources, which are to be added to the 1,100,000 euros paid at bilateral level to support the Country’s health care system over the 2015-2016 period, will go to pay for interventions in the sectors of health care, food security, education and promoting the resilience of vulnerable refugee populations,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano.

He added: “Over a million civilians are currently displaced from the Democratic Republic of Congo and more than 30,000 have crossed into neighbouring Angola: the two camps opened by the Angolan Government in the Lunda Norte Province are already at the top of their capacity.” Minister Alfano went on to underscore that “the intervention by our Cooperation service is aimed at unburdening the Angolan Government from assuring assistance and protection to the refugee populations.”
