“Through the Italian Cooperation service, I have arranged for a one-million-euro funding in favour of the International Organisation for Migration to respond to the worsening of the humanitarian crisis in Somalia, which is recently menaced by the threat of famine,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano. He went on: “This contribution will help implement activities aimed at improving access to sources of clean water and sanitary conditions by supplying water with water tankers, promoting good hygiene practices, distributing hygiene kits among the communities at risk of cholera epidemics and providing assistance to internally displaced people taking refuge in the areas of Mogadishu, Gedo and the Lower Juba Region.”
The condition of vulnerability in which the population finds itself is provoking a large internal migration flow from the rural areas, which are poor in services, towards the large urban centres. Baidoa alone received a flow of approximately 50,000 people last November, putting pressure on the few existing facilities and their capacity to assure basic services to refugees.
The contribution falls within the scope of a broader humanitarian support programme for Somalia worth a total 5 million euros for 2017.
