UNGA. Alfano tells the President of Yemen: “Italy supports UN Envoy Cheikh Ahmed in order to find a solution to the crisis in Yemen”

“Italy, also as a member of the Security Council, is committed to promoting the pursuit of a lasting and inclusive solution to the crisis in Yemen. We staunchly support the efforts of UN Special Envoy Cheikh Ahmed to find a solution in the negotiation. But Italy expects a responsible attitude from the parties, including the legitimate Government, and an openness to finding the necessary political compromises,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, today told the President of Yemen, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulmailk Al-Mekhlafi at a meeting in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Mr Alfano underscored that “the continuation of armed conflict is destined to worsen the population’s already extremely difficult humanitarian conditions. Italy is doing its share in the international efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Yemen, in line with the commitments we undertook at the Donor Conference last April, where we pledged 10 million euros for the 2017-2018 two-year period.”

He went on: “This year we have contributed 4 million euros to the International Committee of the Red Cross, to the World Food Programme and to the United Nations Population Fund. Another programme to combat children’s malnutrition, worth one million euros, will be implemented in the upcoming months. Compared to 2016, Italy has doubled its contribution.”
