The establishment of the Permanent Observatory on Peacekeeping was announced at the opening ceremony of the academic year at the Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa (CASD – Italian Centre for High Defence Studies). The Observatory is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Defence, further testifying to Italy’s unrelenting attention for peacekeeping missions.
The initiative falls within the scope of Italy’s mandate as non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2017 and reflects a tangible long-term result in an area in which Italy has been traditionally engaged, as it contributes to peacekeeping both in financial terms and through the deployment of men and women in areas of crisis.
By organising seminars hosting in-depth debates, analyses and research efforts, the Observatory intends to develop an integrated sectorial approach to the complex issues associated with peacekeeping and stabilisation processes in areas of crisis, the outcome of which can be immediately translated into updating higher education curricula and outlining integrated guidelines at policy level.
