Letter by Minister Alfano to the Secretary of State of Honduras

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano,  sent a letter today to the Secretary of State of the Republic of Honduras, Maria Dolores Agüero Lara, acknowledging the decision issued by the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal that reconfirmed President Juan Orlando Hernández as Head of State, following the election of 26 November last.

While congratulating President Hernández on his election, Minister Alfano highlighted that Italy wishes the tensions, which erupted the day after the voting took place, be resolved soon through a democratic, frank and constructive dialogue between all political forces, and which is in the best interests of the Honduran people and Honduran society.

Italy’s Foreign Ministry trusts that the strong ties of friendship between Italy and Honduras will be further strengthened both in the traditional cooperation fields (first of all, development cooperation and business synergies) and in new sectors of mutual interest, such as fighting transnational organised crime and corruption and supporting the Rule of Law.

Alfano also confirmed that Italy will continue cooperating with Honduran authorities at the international level to promote the shared values and goals of peace, justice, the protection of human rights, the spread of democratic principles, the promotion of economic growth and social inclusion.
