Progress is being made in judicial cooperation between Italy and the United Arab Emirates

The visit to Abu Dhabi by Minister Alfano was an opportunity to finalise the interpretative protocol, which makes the granting of extradition strictly conditional on the death penalty not being applied, when UAE legislation allows it.The agreement, which became necessary to alter the text of the treaty to reflect amendments that were made to the Italian legal system after it was signed, will set in motion the process for ratification in the new parliamentary term. The internal regulatory obstacles have now been overcome, which had prevented Italy from ratifying the Treaty on Extradition between the UAE and Italy that was signed in 2015. The entry into force of the treaty, which was produced with the help of the Ministry of Justice, will provide a solid regulatory framework for extradition requests filed by Italy.
