“I wish to voice my deep concern over the deterioration of the situation in Syria,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano. He also added: “I firmly condemn the indiscriminate bombing the regime is carrying out against defenceless people and civilian infrastructure.”
Italy sides with the United Nations and the International Red Cross in demanding the granting of immediate humanitarian access to the people under siege in Syria in the eastern Ghouta region. Just a few kilometres from Damascus, the eastern Ghouta area is home to 400,000 civilians who are living under a merciless siege by Assad’s forces. In the past few days the bombing in the area has grown indiscriminate, killing hundreds of people. Eastern Ghouta is theoretically one of the de-escalation zones on which an agreement was reached in Astana. Besides the bombing, alarming news has been circulating about an alleged new use of chemical weapons by regime forces.
