As part of Italy’s support to humanitarian mine clearance operations, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, provided funds to finance 12 mine clearance projects comprehensively worth more than 3.5 million euros. The operations – to be performed in cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) – include the mine clearance of territories, medical assistance for survivors and education in the Countries with the highest risk of landmines. The beneficiary Countries include: Libya, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and Jordan. The aforesaid financing will also go to support research activities and awareness-raising campaigns promoting the universalisation of the relevant international Conventions.
