“The latest declaration made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, confirms the validity of the Italian political position on Venezuela,” said the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ricardo Merlo, following the declaration the EU High Representative made yesterday.
“Italy, with its citizens and enterprises, is one of the European countries that has been present the most in Venezuela, standing ready to contribute to the 28-member bloc’s position on Caracas. Minister Moavero Milanesi attended the EU Foreign Affairs Council and I participated in the International Contact Group (ICG),” said Undersecretary Merlo, who went on to add: “Concerns over the country’s humanitarian crisis, a condemnation of judicial and other forms of persecution against the members of the National Assembly, the need for free and credible presidential elections, have always been the core of Italy’s political position.”
“This is the approach we promoted in Caracas during the ICG meetings and the subject matter that we discussed with both Maduro and Guaidò. A political solution is the only way out of this crisis and Italy has the necessary credibility to play the leading role in the process, also thanks to a consistent approach it has followed all through these past few months,” Merlo said.
