At the talks, Minister Di Maio shared his updated evaluation on the state of the Syrian crisis. In this regard, the Foreign Minister observed how the creation of the Syrian Constitutional Committee announced this week by the UN Secretary-General Guterres represents an encouraging step forward in the political process to assure enduring peace in Syria.

Lastly, Minister Di Maio, while confirming Italy’s full support for his work and for the actions promoted by the United Nations, expressed the wish to Special Envoy Pederson that the European Union prove to be united and speak with a single voice on the Syrian crisis. The Minister said: “Italy will continue to do its share both at European level and by contributing to United Nations programmes, especially those concerning humanitarian activities and increasing the presence of civil society organisations.”
